Re-Collection: 140 Tranquerah, mixed media, 2002
Collecting is a substantial part of my creative process. I've collected elements such as sketches, computer generated images, floor plans, photos, Polaroid pictures, journal excerpts, and trilingual text. They are my source of inspiration and means to create Re-Collection: 140 Tranquerah. I use the notion of "House As A Self" to examine intimacy and immensity, physical and psychological space.
Re-Collection: 140 Tranquerah is a recollection model of my Malaysian childhood at 140 Tranquerah Road, Malacca. I lived there from a baby to a 19 year-old. 20 years have past since I moved out of this house where I spent my childhood and formative years. Even now the house keeps appearing in my dreams. I always wonder: was it because I had a wonderful childhood living in that old house,
or am I really homesick? I have a strong desire to come to terms with these feelings – this desire has inspired me to create a visual space to revisit my childhood place.
